How to Disinfect Tweezers Between Clients: The Pro Sanitization Standard
By TweezerCo · 2 July 2026 · 6 min read

If you're an esthetician, brow artist or MUA working on paying clients, the sanitization standard isn't 'clean' — it's disinfection, and in many states, sterilisation. Here's the workflow that meets professional standards and takes under two minutes between clients.
Clean vs disinfect vs sterilise
Cleaning removes visible debris. Disinfection kills most pathogens on the tool surface (the required standard for skin-only contact tools in most jurisdictions). Sterilisation kills everything, including spores — the required standard for anything that breaks the skin. Tweezers used strictly on intact skin need proper disinfection; anything used on lash extensions in the eye area or on broken skin needs sterilisation.
The pro workflow (skin-contact only)
Step one: wipe the tips with a clean gauze to remove hair, skin cells and product. Step two: fully immerse the working end in an EPA-registered hospital-grade disinfectant (Barbicide, Cavicide or 70–90% isopropyl alcohol) for the contact time on the label — typically 10 minutes for full disinfection, 30–60 seconds for a rapid alcohol wipedown between hairs on the same client. Step three: rinse if the label requires, then air dry on a clean paper towel.
The pro workflow (eye area / broken skin)
After cleaning, tweezers must be autoclaved (steam sterilisation) or pouched and sent to a sterilisation service. UV boxes alone are not sterilisation — they're a storage aid at best.
Between-hair sanitisation (same client)
Keep a small glass dish of 70% isopropyl on your station. Dip the tips between hairs to prevent cross-contamination between areas (eg, upper lip and brow).
Storage matters
Once disinfected, tweezers must be stored in a clean covered container or a UV cabinet — not loose in a drawer, not in a pouch with used tools.
Frequently asked
Is 70% isopropyl alcohol enough to disinfect tweezers?
For skin-only contact tools, yes — with the correct contact time. For tools used near broken skin or the eye area, full autoclave sterilisation is required.
How often should I replace pro tweezers?
Well-cared-for surgical steel tweezers last years. Under our lifetime warranty, misalignment from normal use is covered — you keep the tool, we re-hone or replace.
Can I use Barbicide on tweezers?
Yes. Barbicide is EPA-registered and safe for stainless steel with the manufacturer's contact time (10 minutes for full disinfection).
